Microsoft has sent out invitations for a Windows centred event in San Francisco, but it plans to talk about enterprise too. The event takes place in less than two weeks, September 30th. We expect to see a Windows 9 preview available for public shortly after the event to developers.
Windows 9 is finally getting a proper redesign as many expected. It will introduce virtual desktops in case you need more than one and a new notification centre. It will be a better bridge between the Windows 7 desktop experience and Windows 8.1 touch interface. Needless to say most Windows users spend time in desktop mode rather than with this new interface. Notifications are better looking and more like Windows Phone 8.1 notifications.
We would expect to see release to manufacturing (RTM) version ready for late summer 2015 and the actual version shipping around October 2015. We will be looking for DirectX 12 support in this new operating system as this is what a lot of PC gamers care about. It might bring some lower level, closer to metal access and speed things up.
We are sure that this will be a case Windows 8 evolution rather than revolution, but we will know more in two weeks time.
