LG profits reach two-year high

$504 million for April June

LG Electronics appears to be doing rather well all of a sudden and says its second-quarter operating profit will reach a two-year high.

Most of the cash appears to be coming from home appliances and tellies.

The company said that it made $504 million in the second quarter which will be its most profitable quarter since the second quarter of 2014. The final results are coming out in late July.

LG Electronics did not offer any additional details ahead of final results scheduled for late July. But the heads-up has the analysts jolly happy as it can only mean that the outfit saw strong profit from its appliances business due to sales of premium products. Global warming also appeared to help the sales of air conditioners.

The TV division likely swung to profit as major sporting events such as the 2016 UEFA European Championship soccer tournament boosted demand for large-sized sets.

However, a few analysts are not optimistic that LG can keep doing so well in the second half of the year, however, as the appliances business enters a seasonally weaker period.

Sales of its G5 smartphones have been disappointing and  the mobile division likely reported a fifth consecutive operating loss in April-June.

While the G5 was original, LG sold only 2.2 million units of the strategic model due to stiff competition. The mobile division is expected to be a loss maker throughout the 3Q16.

LG Electronics also on Friday said revenue for the second quarter likely rose 0.5 percent which was slightly lower than analysts expected.
