Brace yourself 8K telly is coming

2020 Tokyo Olympics will make everyone want one

Daniel Tseng, president, Corning Display Technologies Taiwan claims that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to serve as a catalyst to facilitate 8K telly.

He told Digitimes that the global top-5 panel makers are ready to roll out related 8K TV products in order to meet the emerging business opportunities that are to come in 2020 and beyond, said.

While most panel makers are currently rolling out 8K displays using a-Si technology, Tseng believes that IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) LCD technology is more suitable for the production of 8K panels due to its higher electron mobility for the production of OLED and 8K displays with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

Of course Corning has just released Astra Glass, with its properties including low total pitch variation, low total thickness variation and low sag, is a precisely engineered oxide glass substrate that enables the production of higher pixel density immersive displays for high-performance tablets, notebooks, and 8K TVs, Tseng claims.

The display glass market is expected to continue to grow at a CAGR of around five per cent during 2018-2022, while the above 65-inch TV market segment will expand at a CAGR of 20 per cent during the period, Tseng said.

The growth of screen sizes will drive the expansion of the display glass market. The average display size of TVs is expected to increase by 1.5 inches a year from 2018-2022, reaching 51 inches in 2020 from 45 inches in 2018, he said.

However, during the forecast period, the CAGR of the over 60-inch display glass market is likely to reach 18 per cent, much higher than a CAGR of three per cent forecast for the below 60-inch display glass segment, Tseng said.
