Surge in Internet traffic in 2024

Cloudflare sees 17.2 per cent growth

Cloudflare’s 2024 Internet Traffic Report reveals a notable 17.2 per cent global surge in internet traffic, underscoring the continued expansion of the digital world.

Among the key highlights of the report, Google remains the undisputed leader, holding its position as the most visited service, while the US continues to dominate as a source of bot traffic, contributing to 34.6 per cent of all such activity.

The report reveals a slight decline in IPv6 adoption. Cloudflare notes that IPv6 traffic accounted for just 28.5 per cent of global data in 2024, a drop from 33.75 per cent the previous year. This shift stands in contrast to the growing expectations of IPv6’s global expansion, leaving some to question whether adoption is slowing or simply plateauing.

Additionally, the report highlights that a significant proportion of TCP connections—about 20.7 per cent—are unexpectedly terminated before any useful data can be exchanged. Cloudflare attributes these disruptions to various causes, including Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, client-side irregularities, and network-level content filtering that may prematurely interrupt connections.

Breaking down these early terminations, Cloudflare explains that nearly half of these incidents—referred to as "Post SYN" closures—occur after the server has received a client’s SYN packet, but before an acknowledgement (ACK) or any real data can be exchanged. These are often indicative of DoS attacks or network scanning. In contrast, "Post-ACK" and "Post-PSH" anomalies are more typically associated with intentional tampering, such as content filtering, especially when observed in high volumes within specific networks.

Mobile traffic remains a dominant force in internet usage, comprising 41.3 per cent of all traffic in 2024, roughly on par with the previous year. The traffic is largely split between Apple and Android devices, with iOS accounting for just under a third and Android holding the lion’s share of two-thirds.

When it comes to browsers, Google Chrome continues to reign supreme, with 65.8 per cent of all requests routed through the popular browser. Apple’s Safari, which is naturally the most common browser on iOS devices, accounted for 15.5 per cent, while Microsoft’s Edge garnered 6.9 per cent. Mozilla Firefox, once a dominant force, now commands only four per cent of the browsing market.

In the realm of search engines, Google remains the overwhelming leader, commanding over 88 per cent of all search traffic that passed through Cloudflare’s network. Far behind, Russia’s Yandex and China’s Baidu secured the second and third spots, claiming 3.1 per cent and 2.7 per cent, respectively. Microsoft’s Bing trailed with a mere 2.6 per cent share, while DuckDuckGo, known for its privacy focus, accounted for just 0.9 per cent.
