Asus questions ultrabook pricing

by on26 July 2011

Can’t keep them under $1,000
Asus seems to be having second thoughts about Intel’s ultrabook platform and it is now telling the world that it won’t be able to meet Intel’s $1,000 price tag.

In fact, Intel believes all ultrabooks should cost up to $1,000, but Asus doesn’t believe it can meet the target. An Asus insider told the Taipei Times that the only way of getting the cost under $1,000 is to use Core i3 chips. This clearly doesn’t coincide with Intel’s projections and Asus claims Core i5 and Core i7 models would cost well over $1,000.

However, Intel is planning to use Core i5 and Core i7 chips in most ultrabooks. In addition, the cost of solid state drives and other components could drive up the cost to between $1,000 and $2,000, the source said.

It appears that ultrabooks will be quite a bit more challanging to produce than originally expected, but Intel is committed to the new form factor and it hopes ultrabooks will manage to revive sales in 2012.
