Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air looks rather nice

Apple fans call foul

Xiaomi has managed to anger a few people with its Mi Notebook Air – not only does it look like Apple’s love child, it even borrowed the name “air” although perhaps "snow" would have been more appropriate.

Of course the Tame Apple Press thinks anyone who makes a thin notebook these days copied their favourite PC manufacturer. Lately Apple has taken to copying Microsoft’s Surface so it can’t really complain.

The Mi Notebook Air is pitched as a rival to the 13in MacBook Air. The screen is the same size but, thanks to an ultra-thin bezel, Xiaomi’s laptop is 11 percent smaller body-wise. It’s 13 percent thinner too, and a little lighter in weight: 1.28kg as opposed to the MacBook Air’s 1.35kg.

Unlike the Apple product it comes with a proper operating system which you can actually do something with – Windows 10. It has an Intel Core i5 2.7GHz processor, 8GB of RAM, an Nvidia GeForce 940MX GPU, and 256GB of SSD storage. The full-size keyboard has individually backlit keys, it has a full HD resolution.

It has a USB Type-C port which can manage a half capacity charge in half an hour. When it is fully charged it will run for 9.5 hours of power out if it. There are also HDMI and USB 3.0 ports, too.

These notebooks are set to be affordable – something which is not really in Apple’s language. It will go for $750.85. So far it seems destined only for China, probably to avoid a messy IP battle with Apple, but you should be able to pick one up through the Hong Kong online shops.
