Mid-range Pascal gets GDDR5-class memory

by on06 April 2016

Huang pimps up Pascal

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang mentioned an upcoming mid-range GPU based on the company’s next-generation “Pascal” architecture which will not use HBM2 memory..

Huang did not reveal many other details, he was mostly there to talk about the Drive PX compute module which is a GPU-accelerated deep-learning box that Nvidia is basing much of its self-driving car tech around. But the Drive PC uses a pair of these mid-range "Pascal" MXM boards and that is where it gets interesting.

The layout of the mid-range GPU suggests that NVIDIA is using GDDR5-class memory. Our guess is that it will be the newer and faster GDDR5X standard. If chips are released unto the consumer market, which they should be it will be rather interesting.

We expect to see more details at Computex 2016 next month. Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 and the GTX 970 successirs are expected to feature GDDR5X memory.
