AMD has brought a big update to the Apple Mac Pro system by introducing the new Radeon Pro W6000X series graphics cards, with all three SKUs, the Radeon Pro W6900X, Radeon Pro W6800X, and the Radeon Pro W6800X Duo, based on the RNDA2 Navi 21 GPU.

Considering that the Apple Mac Pro was pretty much left out with the Radeon Pro W5700X, a graphics card based on the same GPU as the Radeon RX 5700 XT, the new Radeon Pro W6000X series is a rather big update. Based on the AMD Navi 21 GPU and bringing all features of the RDNA2 architecture, the new Radeon Pro W6000X series will be based on a 7nm manufacturing process, bring GDDR6 memory, AMD Infinity Cache, and AMD Infinity Fabric.

According to AMD, the new Radeon Pro W600X series GPUs for Mac Pro will bring "exceptional performance and incredible visual fidelity" for a wide variety of demanding professional applications, like 3D rendering, 8K video compositing, color correction, and more.

“We developed the AMD Radeon PRO W6000X series GPUs to unleash professionals’ creativity and help them bring more complex and compute-intensive projects to life, from animating 3D film assets to compositing 8K scenes to game development,” said Scott Herkelman, corporate vice president and general manager, Graphics Business Unit at AMD. “The new AMD Radeon PRO W6000X series is packed with remarkable energy efficiency, enhanced compute units and a new visual pipeline, enabling Mac Pro users to do more in less time across a broad range of pro applications.”

The first SKU in the lineup is the Radeon Pro W6800X, featuring 60 Compute Units (CUs) for a total of 3840 Stream Processors. It provides up to 16 TFLOPs for FP32 compute performance, comes with 128MB of Infinity Cache, and feature 32GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit memory interface. The total graphics power (TGP) is set at 300W.

The Radeon Pro W6900X packs 80 CUs, for a total of 5120 Stream Processors and features the same 128MB of Infinity cache, 32GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit memory interface, and the same 300W TGP. The peak FP32 compute performance is set at up to 22 TFLOPs.

The most interesting SKU is the Radeon Pro W6800X Duo, a dual-GPU solution with a total of 120 CUs (60 per GPU), for a total of 7680 Stream Processors and a peak FP32 compute performance of 30.2 TFLOPs. As these are two GPUs, they have a total of 64GB of GDDR6 memory (32GB per GPU) on two 256-bit memory interfaces, and 128MB of Infinity Cache per GPU. Interestingly, the TGP is set 400W, but this is probably due to a lower clock on the dual-GPU card.

All three SKUs should be offered soon on Apple's Mac Pro site soon, and now it will be possible to equip it with a total of four GPUs, with two Radeon Pro W6800 Duo graphics cards via external Fabric Link connection.

According to what we could gather from Apple's Mac Pro site, these GPUs cost quite a pretty penny, and add anywhere from $1,800 for the Radeon Pro W6800X, $9,000 for the two Radeon Pro W6800X Duo (four GPUs), to up to $11,000 for two Radeon Pro W6900X cards (compared to Radeon Pro W5700X with 16GB memory).

You can check out more details over at Apple's Mac Pro site.
