Apple said to be working on 4.8-inch phablet

Could we see three iPhones in 2013? Probably not

Rumours of a cheaper iPhone have been floating around for quite a while and they appear on a seasonal basis. However, this time around there is also talk of a bigger iPhone, a 4.8-inch device designed to counter Android phablets.

The China Times reports that Apple will release three iPhones throughout the year, including the next generation iPhone, a cheaper iPhone variant and a 4.8-inch device dubbed iPhone Math. That’s math, not meth. It's also possible that the original name was lost in translation.

If true, the rumours could signify a significant shift in Apple’s strategic thinking, but we’re not entirely sold on the concept. Going from a single iPhone launch a year to three devices in 2013 sounds like a stretch. True, some phonemakers like Samsung have carved out a new niche market with their tablets, but that doesn’t mean Apple will enter it as well.

As for the cheaper iPhone, analyst Ming Chi Kuo believes it will be similar in design to the current iPhone 5, but it will ditch aluminium in favor of cheaper polycarbonate, in six different colours.

Do we have to mention that we are skeptical?
